HU ADVANCE-IT Completes Media Week

One unique aspect of HU ADVANCE-IT is our Media Campaign.  It fits within the Advocacy theme (Education. Advocacy. Empowerment.) and is designed to raise awareness of the scholarly contributions of Women STEM Faculty.

One special component integrated into our Media Campaign is the professional studio recording, in conjunction with Howard University’s TV Station – WHUT, of each Women Faculty’s STEM story and how she arrived on Howard’s campus.  We have not interviewed everyone yet, but have had participants from about half the Women STEM Faculty population.

To participate, Women STEM Faculty completed Media Training hosted by Howard University’s Office of University Communication for 3 hours.  This training provided suggestions for staying in control of any interview – whether for TV, radio, or one in a professional studio.  Participants learned key interview strategies, went through a mock interview that was recorded, watch the recording while being critiqued, and had the opportunity to mock interview again to implement improvements.  Besides being extremely benefit, the training was fun.  The in-studio interview was even more thrilling.  Participants enjoyed both immensely.

During Media Week, Tammie Green, HU ADVANCE-IT’s Media Consultant, arranged to have each participant pampered with hair and make-up, participate in a professional photoshoot, and be interviewed about their STEM stories (how they became interested in STEM fields, key accomplishments, and their overall experiences) along with how they arrived on Faculty at Howard.

HU ADVANCE-IT will release these photos and video clips continuously over the coming weeks and months.
