Please join HU ADVANCE-IT in welcoming Dr. Dara Norman, the 2015 Faculty Fellow, to Howard University! Dr. Norman is a phenomenal researcher, scholar, and African-American Astronomer who has also made significant contributions to the education of the next generation of scientists. She is currently an Associate Scientist at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, AZ. A representative from Google has been quoted as saying, “Unconscious bias is why we don’t have a diverse workplace.” Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, also recently made an unconscious bias remark toward women at the 2014 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.  Needless to say, he and Microsoft felt the backlash. HU ADVANCE-IT Completes Media Week

One unique aspect of HU ADVANCE-IT is our Media Campaign.  It fits within the Advocacy theme (Education. Advocacy. Empowerment.) and is designed to raise awareness of the scholarly contributions of Women STEM Faculty. [PAST] Women Faculty in STEM Research Symposium 2013

HU ADVANCE-IT, in partnership with Women as Chang Agents (WACA) held a Women Faculty in STEM Research Symposium on March 26, 2013 celebrating Women’s History Month. The symposium opened with welcoming remarks by Dr. Paula Whetsel-Ribeau, WACA founder and HU ADVANCE-IT Co-PI. Nine (9) female faculty members presented their research and results to date from STEM disciplines ranging from Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Biology, Nanotechnology and Biochemistry.
